Built on a rocky outcrop on the mountain of Staufenberg near the town of Sélestat, this castle was built by Fredric II (known as Frederic the One-eyed one) as a fortress as well as for the prestige. A battle with the Swedes left the castle in ruins in 1633, a state in which it remained until restoration began in 1901. Today visitors can tour the courtyards, kitchen, dwelling areas and fortifications. Open seven days a week, except on January 1, May 1 and December 25.
